Huh.
So, it's been over a month since my last post.
It's not that things haven't been going on, it's just that I'm SOOOOOO tired I can barely stay up until 8 pm. I'm completely exhausted. This is partly due to the fact that it gets dark at 4:30pm and my body automatically thinks it's time to start getting ready for bed. We've also been really busy at work so by the time I get home, I have about enough energy left to shovel some food in my mouth, stare at a wall for an hour and mumble some nonsense to Tre before I have to get myself in bed. But mostly, I think it's because my little brother was here in the States visiting from Australia and so Tre and I shuttled ourselves back and forth pretty much every day between our house and my parents house, where my brother and his wife were staying, to hang out with them. I'm so grateful for the time we had to hang out with Drew but it was tiring and it's nice to have some sense of 'routine' back. ;)
While Drew was here, we celebrated Thanksgiving, introduced them to geocaching, went shopping, showed them around Portland, took in several movies and played lots and lots of games. SO MUCH FUN! It was especially hard to have my brother leave this time. I think it's because as I get older, I realize that even though we may be very different, the commonality that we have is that we've grown up in the same family together. And no one will ever understand that experience as well as Drew will. So, as Tre and I drove away from my parents house a couple Saturday nights ago, and I cried all the way home, although I was sad, I also feel so very blessed we were able to visit and that we can still find common ground.
Speaking of last Saturday, the ENTIRE Doty family, all 16 of us, gathered at my parent's house for a little get together. It's been 6 years since we were all together...since Tre and I got married, that is. All my aunts, uncles and cousins were there and we all got to catch up a bit. Some played our family game of Shanghai while others watched the Civil War game on tv. Sad to say that Tre and I are the only Beaver fans amongst a family of Ducks...so I think the family in general was happy to see the Beavs get walloped! Shame shame! Who knows when the next Doty family reunion will be...hopefully not another 6 years...but as we all get older, it becomes more and more difficult to get everyone in the same place at the same time.
Anyway, there's a quick update...well, sort of quick! I'll add some pics next entry. I might even thieve some pics from my brother's arsenal of photos he's shot recently while in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Quite the travelling man!
Till next time...

ramblings of the everyday...
I haven't blogged in a very long time. My sincere apology, I know you have all been desperately wondering what's been going on in my exciting life. :) All 2 of you that follow my blog...
Allow me to use photographs and some lengthy narrative to catch you up...

One of my dearest childhood friends, Sarah, came for a quick visit in early October. We spent a couple days catch up, reminiscing, talking about our stressful jobs (she's a med/surg nurse), and delving into the burning question we have discussed for so many years and which has become even more frantic as we advance into our 30's... kids or no kids? We took her to one of our favorite dessert places in Portland... Pix Patisserie. The selection of desserts are both beautiful and amazingly delicious! I do not remember the names of all our choices...only that mine in the lower right corner is the Amelie...and it is heavenly!
ELECTIONS

Tre and I voted. In Oregon we do mail-in ballots...no waiting in long lines at the polls, just mark your ballot, put a stamp on it and mail it or drop it off at a specified location. With all that built-in convenience...Is there really any reason NOT to vote?
Needless to say, the elections are now over! And not a moment too soon! I will not in any way miss the political radio smears, or slanderous television ads! Why can't politicians play nice? Did they miss out on that important lesson in kindergarten?
While I could indulge in a political rant here, all I will say is that while I am ecstatic about our new President-elect and I am inspired by his vision and quest for change, that is not to say that the road will be paved in gold and fall before us, the nation, with ease. Like all things that are hard-won, we will have to work as a team, red or blue, to get America rolling again. So, however you voted...that has already been decided. What is ahead now, is how each of us chooses to play a part in this new Presidency.
THE PUMPKIN PATCH
Every year, Tre and I go out to Sauvie Island to go to the pumpkin patch. There are probably about 5 on the island and we usually go to the same one year after year. This particular patch has a hay ride, a small petting zoo, a corn maze, a veggie market and some fresh tasties like corn on the cob, hot apple cider and carmel apples.
The downside is that most of urban Portland also likes this patch...and they descend on this tiny little farm in their huge SUV's and high end rubber rain boots with their ill-behaved snotty children. They treat the pumpkin patch as if it were something to check off their "to do" list rather than an adventure and precious time to spend in nature and with their families.
Case in point: as we were driving out to this particular patch, one driver several cars in front of us was driving rather slow...perhaps taking in the beautiful scenery or breathing in the fresh air or simply enjoying the rain-free, rather warm and gorgeous day. The car behind us, on the other hand, was in a hurry...he passed both us and the car in front of us. He arrived at the entrance to the pumpkin patch exactly 30 seconds before us. Idiot! So, we didn't go to our usual patch this year because I was afraid I would feel it necessary to tell him...well, let's just say it would probably not have been too appropriate. :)
So, we went up the road another couple miles to a farm that we pick berries at in the summer, and found pumpkins that were bigger, more varied and a lot more beautiful than those in the other patch. Na-na-na...take that, Mr. big-SUV-passing-people-to-go-to-the-pumpkin-patch!
We enjoyed our time at the patch, enjoyed the beautiful weather and found ourselves the perfect pumpkins for the season!

HALLOWEEN
Halloween is never a big holiday in my world. I like harvest festivals or autumn celebrations...but the whole dressing up thing has never been my gig. But since everyone at work was dressing up...I was kinda peer pressured into it.
I was a butterfly...and not a beautiful especially dressed up butterfly. I wore all black with wings...yeah...it was pretty amazing! :) The women at my work got pretty creative though. There was a pregnant, cigarette smoking nun, a rather large woman who had lost her dog in the backside of her dress, a mad scientist, and a crazy cat lady. So, while in costume, we still had to perform our nursing duties. My giant butterfly wings kept poking patients in the face as I was trying to start IV's on them...so eventually I got rid of the wings...and then I was just a pupa/grub.

AUTUMN ON DEPAUW ST.
I remember a year ago when Tre and I were touring houses for sale in anticipation of buying. While looking at another house in the same neighborhood, I stumbled upon the house we eventually ended up buying. I fell in love with the outside instantly...cute Cape Cod that backs a city park...heck, yeah! When we finally toured the inside, I knew this is where we were supposed to be.So, imagine that when we were touring the house, the two GIANT maple trees in the front were all ablaze in color! I had that whole 'curb appeal' thing going for it...and I could see nothing buy the idyllic autumn trees and the cute house. Now, imagine that we were moving in a month later and there were massive piles of leaves in the yard, on the street, pushed to the side, spilling out of the compost bins, etc. I remember Tre looking at me and asking if he could buy a leaf blower. My hippie sense made me tell him "No...we'll rake them! Why kill the environment when you could use a little self-propulsion and rake them up? COME ON!" After you look at the pics below I ask you: Is it too late to concede and go for the leaf blower or will I lose all credibility and my hippie sainthood?
So, this is our yard before raking...the lawn, sidewalk and street are COVERED in leaves, not to mention any car that happens to stay under them for longer than 10 minutes.

This is our yard after spending 1 hour raking, bagging and composting the leaves. Do take a look at the canopy of leaves still up in the tree. Yeah...so the night after doing all that yard work, our yard looked like the previous picture...absolutely covered in leaves.
HAPPY COUPLEDOM

A recent pic of hubby and me. Those self-portraits where one person holds the camera never fail to make people smile...usually cuz they're so goofy! ;)
Thanks for checking up on us and our goings-on...

a long awaited visit and the world's finest cookie
I just need to let out a resounding "WAHOO!!!" After six L-O-N-G years, my younger brother will be returning to the States for a visit. It's hard to believe it's been six years since he was last in here....so many changes have occurred during those years. To say he's been sorely missed would be an understatement. As I've gotten older, I'm so keenly aware that the only other person who truly understands what it's like to grow up in my family, is my brother. And oh, how I miss him! He'll be setting foot in P-town in 20 days...not like I'm ANXIOUSLY awaiting his arrival or anything. Except I am...desperately!
With Drew's arrival comes the returned delight of my favorite cookie in the world...the Tim Tam. These cookies are an other-worldly-good, insanely delicious, amazingly decadent marvel of perfection , heaven-come-to earth savory chocolaty crispy bundle of joy. Have I emphasized enough how much I LOVE this cookie? While you can purchase these cookies at an inflated price at 'World Market'...nothing beats goods from the source!
So, I'd like to make a cookie toast...here's to my brother's visit and the best cookie in the world. I love them both dearly!
Oh...and pick yourself up a pack of these overly priced cookies and let me know if you're addicted to them too! They are Divine!

26.2
So, yesterday some of my dear friends conquered an amazing feat...they ran AND finished the Portland Marathon...they have the medals, t-shirts and blisters to prove it! I'm completely awed and humbled! I cannot imagine training so long and hard for something that in-and-of-itself is something so long and hard. Running for 5 hours straight? Uh...my inner sloth is cringing at the mere thought!
The 19th mile marker is about 5 blocks from my house so I went out in the rain and drizzle to witness this colossal event and even cheer some people on! It is amazing to see so many different kinds of people on the race course. I was anticipating tall, lean and lithe runners outfitted in assorted shades of skin tight lycra...and there were some of those...but I was more shocked at the 'normal' people who were running. People of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. They were at mile 19...and they were still running! Could this be?
During my time at mile 19, I saw two of my friends pass by...I felt nothing short of giddy at their accomplishment. What does it feel like to train for so many months and then conquer 26.2 miles? I felt so inspired and excited...Maybe I should do a marathon too! Yes...I can do this! I mean, I used to be athletic...I used to run...It would be a great excuse to get in incredible shape...To commit to something and see it through. Yes...I could do a marathon! Yes, I'm GOING to do a marathon!!!
So, I spent some time online looking at all the local 5k races (we're starting small here people!). I clicked through on-line photo albums, read about races and even found one that I think would be a pretty good match for me...the Hippie Chick Half Marathon! Maybe I could really do this...
I checked out the race date...figured out how many months it would take to train...what gear I would need to invest in. Looked at some more races...Pasta to Pints- that's a race that sounds like me! WOW, I had no idea there were so many races in Portland! I should sign up for one, then I won't have any choice...I'll have committed...I'll HAVE to do the run!
So, I went and got a bowl of ice cream.
Baby steps here, people! Baby steps!
The first step is THINKING about it...
KUDOS to the marathon finishers!
You know who you are...Chad and Shannon!
You two are truly AMAZING!

R & R
The view of the gardens and creek from the private balcony off our room
Early morning coffee and tea is served at 7 AM. I took my cup of tea and sat outside on the deck, admiring the Olympics and the bliss of sunrise.
The Blue Hole quick stop market which sold an eclectic mix of beverages (including nice wines), local jewelry and snacks and also provided several seating areas to relax in while enjoying the company of a local furry resident.

On the beach in Port Townsend (PT) where we watched huge ships travel through the sound, looked out across the water to local islands and searched for shells and cool rocks on the shore.

The view of Discovery Bay from the porch on Jenny's Cottage. One of my all time favorite places in the world!

The wicker furniture on the porch at Jenny's Cottage...a great place to read, watch the water and sip on wine!

Tre kayaking at dusk in Discovery Bay at the beach by Jenny's Cottage...amazing, huh?
A sunset Discovery Bay style!

Happiness & Heaviness
Hello blog world! It's been a LONG while since I've posted something! I can't say that nothing has been going on, because so much has been, it's just that I'm just a lazy blogger...and remember I warned you about that when I first started this blog. So, I'm back in the saddle again...
HAPPINESS
While it hasn't been the summer of my dreams in terms of lazy days, camping, hiking, bike riding and all the other fun stuff I LOVE to do, I've gotten in a few weekends of relaxation here and there. Honestly, one of my favorite memories of the summer was a weekday I was cancelled at work and Tre and I went to throw the Frisbee at Vancouver Lake park. We were both barefoot, with lush cold green grass under our feet and when we got tired of chasing the Frisbee we laid down in the grass on our backs and watched the cottonwood fuzzies floating in the sky above and chatted about inconsequential things and told jokes. While I wish all days were as savory as that one, it was definitely a highlight in what has been an exhausting summer with starting a new job and the emotional load that comes with it...but more on that later.
Just last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Claire Fortner. She's the new snugly family member who has turned my friends Jeff and Michelle into parents. She's almost 6 weeks old now and has begun her "fussy" stage. She's cute as a button and I really enjoyed meeting this new little soul! I took a few pics when I was there...to me, they are hilarious and pretty self explanatory! Ah, diapers! ;)

HEAVINESS
I knew that my job was, at some point, going to become emotionally difficult. After all, I'm dealing with people who are battling cancer and unfortunately, cancer is still a formidable disease to get. For every one success story, there are multiple losses. While there have been many deaths in my short time at this job, in the last few weeks several of these deaths have become difficult for me to manage emotionally, due to my bond with the patient. I see many of the same patients week after week, I become a part of their life while they are receiving treatment. I hear about their lives, jobs, hobbies, hopes, struggles and I meet their families..mothers, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren. In turn I answer their questions and share myself and my life with them. That makes it all the more difficult when I hear about a hospice referral or a demise of one of these patients whom I know, have cared for and have invested in. It hits my heart hard. I realize all they are dealing with...the goodbyes, the uncertainty and the fear of what lies ahead, knowing they will be leaving dear ones behind. It's overwhelming! And while I cannot change the course their disease has taken, answer the question of "Why me?" or take away the sadness and anger they feel, I can hold them in my thoughts and learn from the courageous way in which they fought for their life while keeping a smile on their face. I expected to grieve for my patients when I took this job and I know that while the emotional aspect will not change, my coping and processing of it will. As hard as this is for me right now, I know that I am doing what I should be doing...that I am meant to be the nurse for these patients.
MORE HAPPINESS
It's always good to use the "sandwhich approach"...happy, heavy, happy! That way you end on the upbeat! This weekend Tre and I are taking off to enjoy 4 days to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary! I can't believe it's been six years already! And while our marriage journey has certainly NOT been easy, it's been enriching and gratifying. We're headed up to Port Townsend, WA...to the same little cabin we spent the first few days of our honeymoon in. We've planned some great geocaches in the area, a hike up Hurricaine Ridge in Olympic National Park and definitely some much earned R & R! My parent's were kind enough to watch our furry kids, so we're solo this weekend which adds to the bliss of it all! I hope to get a post-anniversary blog with pictures up soon after our return!

10 things I found in my fridge...and wish I hadn't
I get in these crazy cleaning moods sometimes.
I was in one this morning and tomorrow is trash day...perfect timing!
Today's obsession was the fridge.
I guess it's been awhile since I cleaned the fridge out. There were some strange findings!
1) 3 jars of buffalo wing sauce from 'Fire on the Mountain', purchased by Tre in late January-February, to imitate his favorite delicacy at home. Aforementioned 3 jars were gelatinous with a rock hard creme brulee- esque topping and the beginnings of 'fuzz'. Hmmm.
2) 1 jar of lingonberries, purchased by Tre to accompany his beloved Ikea meatballs most likely procured in early/mid January. Jar had been dropped numerous times before leaving the store and again upon arrival at home. Natural lingonberry red had shifted to a dark Merlot looking color. Probably not a good thing. Possible spoil date advanced by repeated dropping.
3) 1 jar of pear sauce, purchased by yours truly in March/April, hidden in the back recesses of the fridge guarded closely by 2 jars of pickles. Usual light yellow colored pear sauce was more a lime-green hue with a colony of red 'fuzz' taking over one side of the jar.
4) 3 left-over pork chops, prepared by Tre early last week. No suspicious color or odor noted, but dating made vittles seem suspicious and therefore ceremonially dumped in trash.
5) 1 small Gladware plastic full of broccoli, prepared by Tre early last week to accompany the pork chops. Pork chop suspicion = broccoli suspicion, guilty by association.
6) 2 Gladware plastics full of blueberries, purchased and handpicked by Tre, date unknown. Blueberries displayed various growth stages including young and light blue, plump and perfect, and finally shriveled old man raisin berries. While color remained mostly true blue, grey 'fuzz' had created townships throughout plastic holding.
7) 1 bowl full of left-over refried beans and corn, prepared by Tre possibly 10-11 days ago, for taco night. A minuscule amount of unidentified slime settling on the bottom and rank odor detected as plastic protective covering was removed. Gagging and nose wrinkling ensued.
8) 1 jar of Tostino's medium salsa, purchase date unknown, although jar states expiration date as 2-28-08. Jar had obviously been opened and user procured maybe one serving. Although contents retained original color, product had coagulated...yes, coagulated...and three rather large white 'fuzzies' created an island on both the contents and the lid.
9) Macaroni and tuna, prepared by Tre 8-10 days ago. I do not feel this food item needs any more descriptive narration. One can only use their imagination to give character and odor to this blessed concoction. 'Nuff said.
10) One carafe of homemade strawberry syrup, prepared by Leigh, circa late May. This little find gives new meaning to the word congealed, as contents were actually one solid jello-like block with a watery grey syrup on top.
Please do not judge me.
Please know that despite the contents of my fridge, I really am a clean-freak...I've just been busy lately.
Please note that substantial amounts of bleach were used to subsequently clean the shelving in the refrigerator and most Gladware associated with this experience has been recycled.
No organisms were harmed in the cleaning of the fridge, all aforementioned 'fuzzies', slimes and unidentified congealed substances were released into the wild (aka city dump) to further their species.

Wedded Bliss
My dear friend, Michelle (aka Kitten or Little One), who survived the tortures of nursing school with me, got hitched this past weekend! She and her fiance, Mike, have one of those amazing love stories that just makes you feel gooey inside...but that's a blog for another time. As with any wedding, it had its share of crazy times and drama, but overall, it was AMAZING! The wedding itself was so personal and heartfelt! Michelle looked so very beautiful and Mike so handsome. It was a fun party and I felt so very honored to be a part of it!
Some of the memorable moments of the wedding weekend:
* The day before the wedding the bride took her entire bridal party out for a day of pampering. Each of us got a manicure and a pedicure complete with our choice of nail color! It was SUCH a treat and oh, so relaxing!
* The day of the wedding, my friend Carrie (who was also in the wedding) and I picked up the bride (including wedding dress, veil and overnight bag for the honeymoon) to get her to the salon to have her hair done. Miracle #1: I arrived at the bride's house ON TIME. This may not seem like a miracle but trust me...this is no small feat for me as I am perpetually late...ALL the time. So, together we drove the bride down to her hair salon which happens to be on the outskirts of an area with lots of boutiques and swanky shopping. Miracle #2: I got a parking space RIGHT in front of the hair salon...a major accomplishment on a busy Saturday with lots of shoppers. At the hair salon we were met by another bridesmaid, Rosemary, who was in town from Portland, Maine with her 1 month old daughter, Caty. While the bride got her hair done and Rosemary fed Caty, Carrie and I raced around town stopping at Whole Foods to get the bride some lunch and schedule a nail appointment for the bride to get her nails touched up. Upon arriving back at the hair salon, 1 bride, 3 bridesmaids and a 1 month old piled into my car...along with 1 wedding dress, 1 veil, 3 bridesmaids dresses, a car seat, one small bag of luggage for the bride and Rosemary's suitcase and we headed off to get the bride to the nail salon. Upon arriving at the nail salon...Miracle #3: We got a parking place RIGHT in front of Aveda which is in a part of town notorious for its congested parking. While the bride got her nails touched up, Carrie and I went to grab her coffee while Rosemary put on make-up on in the salon. As both Carrie and I have NO idea about the whole make up thing...Miracle #4: two very kind make-up artists offered their services ensuring that we wouldn't ruin the wedding pictures! So, into my car piled 3 sensational-looking bridesmaids, 1 baby and a beautiful bride with amazing hair and freshly primed nails. Off to get married...
* Unbeknownst to him, I graciously offered up Tremaine's babysitting skills to Rosemary so she could leave Caty in capable hands while she performed her wedding duties. My diabolic plan was to thwart his persistence at starting a family by intimidating and overwhelming him with the work and care a newborn requires. Suspiciously, unlike many other men, Tre was completely unfazed by my offer to Rosemary and was actually pretty excited about the whole thing. I do believe his initial comment was: "If I do good with this one, can we get one of our own?" Hmmm....sly! So, Tre was outfitted with a baby Bjorn and a snugly, albeit fussy, baby Caty nestled therein. In keeping with good timing, she began to fuss louder and louder throughout the wedding party's processional and commenced with a good wail at the onset of the Wedding March. Needless to say, Tre missed the ceremony. On the bright side, baby Caty now has a good head start on naming all the herbs in the garden out at Edgefield under Tre's careful tutelage. Much to the admiration of all, baby Caty fell asleep in her baby Bjorn on Tre's chest. He was the talk of the wedding, dubbed the "Baby Whisperer"and I received more than a few comments on his capabilities. Drat! I was hoping to intimidate and overwhelm him...methinks my plan backfired completely! Grr!
A toast to the McLemore's: Congrats newlyweds! May your journey together be as blessed as the lives you have touched as a couple!
Michelle and Carrie enjoy some pampering before the wedding
The groomsmen enjoying some refreshments at the rehearsal dinner
Rosemary and Carrie...serious discussion?
The mother of the bride with baby Caty
The gorgeous bride in her elegant wedding dress!
The day after the wedding, my friend Carrie and I went to the park with our furry kids. Her furry kid, Molly LOVES to play fetch in the water, especially if it involves enormous tree-trunk sized sticks. While Molly waded in the water, retrieving thrown stick after thrown stick, my aquaphobic furry kids preferred the safety of the shoreline. After awhile, Tsavo got his little paws wet and even retrieved a few small twigs in a few inches of water and after while I coaxed Ellie to do the same. Despite their dislike of water, Tsavo and Ellis sure love Molly...and I sure love the company of Carrie so we were all happy campers! It was a nice end to a blissful weekend!
Tsavo was king of the hill!
Molly enjoying the water!
My dear friend Carrie!

Scooter clubs, Fireworks and Michael Jackson Impressions
No pics to go with this entry so you'll just have to visualize the tasty scenes I'm about to divulge...
Wednesday July 2 - I had a pretty awful day at work and as an unforeseen reward at the end of my day, Tre had scooted over to coax me into going out to supper and then joining him on a scooter ride with the St. John's Scooter Club. Honestly, the LAST thing I wanted to do after a horrific work day was scoot around P-town with a bunch of strangers. But after bitching about my day and snarfing down a panini, I was evidently in enough of a food coma for hubby to convinced me to join him. So, we arrived at the rendezvous and set off on our adventure with 5 other scooter enthusiasts. One scooter...the diesel one of the bunch...sputtered and died 10 minutes into our ride! But not to fear! The ousted scooterist got to ride bitch in the sidecar of our orange scooter and thus we could continue our journey! After being horribly embarrassed for the first 15 minutes of the ride (worried someone would recognize me amidst the noisy collection of odd people and machines) I realized I was actually having fun and so embraced my inner dork and enjoyed riding around parts of Portland that I have many times passed in my car and thus never fully appreciated. After much whining and skepticism...scooter club gets a thumbs up of approval!
Friday July 4- Independence Day...it's humorous and tragic to me that as Americans we take great pride in drinking copious amounts of alcohol and setting fire to things to commemorate our freedom from Britain. Alcohol consumption and arson do not seem to mesh well, but then I guess we've been doing things this way for a number of decades without annihilating our race so...whatever! We spent the evening with Tre's family just north in Vancouver, enjoying bar-b-que and conversation. Then we went to the parking lot of the local school where Tre, grinning ear-to-ear and giddy as ever, produced a grand fireworks display. He shot of a number of fireworks that are illegal in Oregon but by crossing the river, we can enjoy them without the threat of fines and police involvement. A fun night was had by all!
Saturday July 5- Tre and I hung out with our good friends Andy and Paige. Our first stop was to check out the "garage sale" at Rogue Brewery. Every year, Rogue has a sale on cases of beer, clothing and other merchandise. The boys shopped for tasty libations, sampling and reading about hops and malts while Paige and I watched them with a mixture of horror and awe. They boys settled on a case each, which were left in the car while we walked to the stadium to take in a Portland Beaver's baseball game. Now, I'm not a fan of baseball by ANY stretch of the imagination but I enjoy the company and people watching. Beers were consumed, some yelling occurred and fun was had by all. Next stop...find food! We ended up at the Deschutes Brewery where additional brews and some tasty vittles were consumed! With the addition of our friend Kim, we then moved the party across the river to Grand Central Bowling. This little establishment used to be pretty run down and eclectic but has since been renovated and now hosts several bowling lanes with enormous TVs at the end of the lanes which play a schizophrenic assortment of music videos. So, while we all enjoyed yet more beers, we strapped on our classy bowling shoes and bowled our little hearts out. At one point a Michael Jackson music video came onscreen and Tre began to dance and moonwalk while he bowled. Honestly, it was pretty humorous and I think the other bowlers enjoyed the free freak show which Tre was more than happy to accommodate.
And there you have a snapshot into our everyday lives!

The Cruiser
I have been pining away for some time for an old-school beach cruiser bike. I love the idea of having a big wire basket in the front and maybe one on the back with which to carry groceries or bouquets of fresh flowers! I love their clunky styling and the aura of carefree trips to sun-drenched parks for afternoons of lolly-gagging and mischief they carry with them...hey, we're day dreaming here people! So, I went on craigslist last week, as I often do when I am bored, and saw this beauty of a cruiser and decided its new home just HAD be with me.
Now I am NOT a spontaneous buyer of 'things'. I believe in simplicity and not having more 'stuff'' than one knows what to do with...or has time to adequately put to use, so, it is quite un-me to have bought the bike in the first place...but, honestly, most of the reason I wanted it had to do with its posting on craigslist. I got a good laugh out of it and decided that anything worth spending this much eloquent writing on and with such a hilarious backstory...just had to be mine! After all, the 'stuff' I do have all carries with it some story or history that endears me to it.
So, I will share the posting with you. I must warn you...this posting is rated M for mature, not all content is suitable for young children. Please be advised...
The beginning of the post is rather ordinary with the specs of the bike, condition, asking price and a phone number the seller can be reached at. The real meat of the posting is the second paragraph which is reproduced here verbatim:
"Now for its tale o' intrigue: this bike belonged to an ex-roomate of mine who left it behind when she had to leave town in a hurry. Why so hurried she left a fancy bike, you ask? Well, because she slept with my boyfriend so the bitch got kicked out of the house and is now back in Tennessee where I last heard she was arrested for drunk driving. But her skanky, pathetic misfortune can be to your advantage. Help me get rid of the last vestige of the slut by buying yourself a shiny new bike!"
How could I not indulge myself in this soap opera-esque drama? It HAD to be mine! So, now I proudly ride my ex-skanky bitch beach cruiser and it makes me smile to know it has some skeletons in its closet...just like it's 'lover-of-things-with-stories' rider. And a good story it is...

procrastination & bliss
Oh, my to-do list is long, but my energy level is low so I've decided to just do what I WANT to do instead of what I SHOULD do. So, this means, I have wasted the better part of the evening catching up on my favorite blogs, reading copious amounts of celebrity gossip online all the while pretending to not notice the dust rhinos (like dust bunnies but on a much more colossal scale) who have started a small township in the corners of all the rooms. I must admit, that while it is quite self-indulgent to ignore the "SHOULDS"...I feel justified. So what if we're out of toilet paper?!?...there are some paper towels in the house that will surely suffice until I muster the energy to replenish the TP. I"ll get to it tomorrow...maybe...maybe not...
Procrastination at its finest!
On a completely different note...one of my favorite bands, Coldplay, will be releasing their 4th album on the 17th! Yes, I pre-ordered it on iTunes and have been anxiously awaiting for the album to drop. Well, being the wonderfully conscientious artists that they are, they have put their entire album online for our listening nirvana. So, for the last 2 evenings I have been playing and replaying their new album, which may be a bit neurotic...but I LOVES my Colplay! Anyway, I'm completely biased (and obsessed), but I think their new album is pretty amazing. So, if you are at all as geeked out by Coldplay as I am...you can listen to their new album here.
Ah, bliss!

Make Over
I've been working like a mad woman lately and by the time I get home at the end of the day, I'm completely exhausted and could fall asleep at 7pm...but I won't let myself.
Anyhoo, instead of cleaning the bathroom or organizing the paper piles in our computer room/office, I decided to spent a ridiculous amount of time on the Internet attempting to change the layout of my blog page!
Who cares that I killed a couple hours of my life perusing blogpage backgrounds before I found the PERFECT one...isn't it worth it?
Enjoy!

One Week Down...
I have officially completed my first week employed as a registered nurse.
While it was a short week due to Memorial Day on Monday, it was a much of what I had anticipated my first week to be...overwhelming, exhausting and mind-blowing. I think what I was unprepared for was the extent to which I would feel the aforementioned things. After only working 4 days, I am completely exhausted and I'm quite sure my head will explode with all the new knowledge getting stuffed into my gray matter! Sadly, it's as if the bank vault holding the past 6 months of resting and recharging I have saved, has been thieved in just 4 days! Uhg!
In addition to the usual things that induce panic when starting a new job, upon arriving at work on Tuesday morning, my new Nurse Manager (whom I think is probably the coolest of people) informs me that she is leaving her position and her last day will be Friday.....FRIDAY!?!?! Yep, as in Friday, 5/30, Friday! WHAT!?!? This lovely and talented Nurse Manager is inarguably the reason I am employed. I've been in contact with her since before I graduated nursing school. She has been patiently working with me for the past 6 months to get me hired on. And as I am making my grand entrance...she is making her graceful departure...and it breaks my heart! Needless to say, there is a lot of CHANGE going on, not only for me but with the other nurses as well, as everyone adjusts.
In addition to the usual 'new job stuff' to learn such as computer charting systems, treatment protocols, names of both staff and patients and the general ebb and flow of the job, I have the incredible task of learning the vast array of chemotherapy medications AND becoming extremely proficient at starting IV's. And by proficient, I really mean EXPERT. Many of our patients have been receiving treatments for years or are older and tend to have difficult veins. And difficult veins beget difficult IV starts. And honestly, no one enjoys getting poked, not to mention getting poked repeatedly...and I DO NOT want to be the nurse that has to poke them over and over again.
The truth is I wish I was a genius (don't we all?!?). Then maybe all of this would not be so overwhelming to me. Not a crazy know-it-all genius...but your average, well-rounded genius! Then I'd be able to learn new things quickly without getting too overwhelmed and without becoming too pretentious and annoying! At this point, I'm feeling like a complete novice at everything. I swear, the learning curve on this job is a vertical climb. And again, while I was anticipating the steep climb, I was not really prepared for it! I feel discouraged and incompetent. I know the truth is that I'm starting something new and that is often challenging and scary.
From all I have read and those I have talked to extensively about this...evidently, there are no Magical Genius Superpowers! I'll have to start with being a hard-working novice who, over time and with experience, will hopefully one day become a proficient chemo nurse...and maybe one day in the distant future, an expert chemo nurse.
So, I will muster all the courage and energy I have.
Onwards and upwards to week two...

Shiba Madness
Anyway, I've been looking forward to this weekend for many reasons but at the top of my list is that this is my last weekend of sloth because I start my new job on Tuesday. No longer will I have the luxury of enjoying leisurely brunches, mid-day runs, spur-of-the-moment trips here and there or late nights spent devouring novel after memoir until the wee hours of morning. Instead I will be learning yet another computer charting system, memorizing chemotherapy medications and all their side effects, perfecting my IV starting skills and getting into the flow of working after spending 3 years "working" in a school setting. I'm both extremely excited and scared to death of Tuesday's impending arrival.
With that said, to head into the long summer ahead means I need to beef up my sleep stockpile and lackadaisical days now! After 2 nights of restless and fragmented sleep, I'll have to think of a plan to have a full night's sleep tonight...hmmm! In the meantime...the dogs need to be walked and I should probably finish the plethora of things crowding my "to do" list!
Happy Memorial Day weekend, all...may it be relaxing and fun!

A Shout Out
So, I'm one of THOSE people...I absolutely ADORE my furry kids!
While I've always been thankful to have them in my life, they've been an especially important component during the last several months. So, I just wanted to share my affections for them and dispense a little info about each one of my little companions. Oh, and I guess I should warn you ahead of time, but each of my kids has a nickname. I have no idea why/when I started doing this but it's just my thing. Tre teases me to no end...but he eventually winds up using their nicknames too!
This is my Tsavo (aka. BoBo). He is VERY laid back, would happily spend an entire day with you in bed (without much coaxing, I might add), randomly brings you a toy so you'll play with him, is a living, breathing garbage disposal as he likes ANY and ALL food, absolutely LOVES hiking (you can actually see him smiling!) and is, of all the creatures in the house, the most peaceful and calm! After a bad day...he's the one that makes it all seem okay after all!
Jasper (aka Jazzy Purr) was rescued from the busy streets of North Portland as a scrawny little kitten. He has been raised with dogs and therefore actually believes he is a dog. The only true cat-like attribute he possesses is a most annoying 'MEOW', which he uses frequently to procure food but occasionally just to go outside. He regularly wrestles with Ellie until one of them ends of screaming, at which time he skulks away flicking his tail and leering at her from the corner of his eye. I'm sure he's cooked up a mighty plan to dominate the universe in that diabolical cat brain of his...but sleeping 20 hours a day probably won't help him achieve his lofty goals!
This is my little Ellie (aka. Noodle, Ellie-gater). She is spirited and spunky with more energy than all the other living creatures in the household, loves to sleep by my side at night (and I have, on more than one occasion, woken up to find her sharing the other side of my pillow), LOVES to be outside and has made it her personal mission in life to keep the yard squirrel free, and regularly wrestles with Jasper in fights that sometimes resemble mixed martial arts matches. Her antics make me laugh on a daily basis and remind me to relax and have a little more fun in life!
