catch-up...the photo dump edition

It's been a crazy busy couple of months. I'm sure that has NOTHING to do with the two busy, growing, little girls in our household coupled with my return to work. Nah. That just can't be it...

Lately, I'm definitely finding it challenging to keep a good balance of everything. It seems my days home are a whirlwind of laundry, wiping bottoms, bathing little bodies, teaching, shaping, exploring, cleaning, sorting, soothing, rearranging, navigating a meltdown, cooking, nurturing, getting frustrated, mourning the loss of 'me' time, relishing, basking, savoring, marveling, longing, worrying, restless, sleepless, exhausted amazing days. My days at work are much the same...except the bottoms are bigger and there is no cooking. :) While I love my job, work is leaving me utterly emotionally empty. I'm exhausted from all the heaviness I carry around with me and then I feel I have little in reserve to offer the family when I get home. Balance...I'm seeking a better balance.

A quick re-cap of the girlies:
Lelia is now just over 22 months old. She's got a second birthday in less than two months! What?!? Where has the time gone? In looking over photos of the past several months, I can definitely see Leelee swiftly settling into toddlerhood. She seems to be changing daily. It's bittersweet. I love seeing her accomplish new feats and broaden her boundaries but I also mourn the newborn Lelia it feels, just joined our family. ::sniff sniff:: She's learning new words and mannerisms. She's very affectionate, always giving kisses and hugs. And best of all, she's an amazing big sister. Always asking about and pointing out 'sissy'. Wren gets ample hugs (smothering) and kisses on a daily basis. Lelia has a sweet spot in her heart for her little sister!

Wren is our chubby mostly happy baby. She weighs over 17 1/2 pounds now, just shy of being 5 months old. She is wearing 9 month clothing. She's a moose! She has amazing rolls on her chubby rolls. LOVE IT! It's taken us awhile to figure her out. She's quite a complex little girl. She loves to be rocked rather vigorously and have a hand placed on the side of her face when she's falling asleep. She is mostly happy but when she gets her pampers in a bunch...watch out! She has a very short fuse. She likes to watch Lelia putter about and is most happy when she can be entertained. She's also an extremely social little girl...she LOVES people...aka...she LOVES to be held. People often remark about how laid back and sweet she is and that the stories we tell about her screaming bloody murder just can't be true. Truth is, she IS sweet and happy...when she's being held. Set that girl down for any amount of time and she unravels rather quickly. Suffice to say, things are finally hitting somewhat of a stride now. Almost 5 months into her life as an outside baby! PHEW! It's been a challenging few months, to say the least. We are so blessed to have two healthy thriving girls who love each other immensely.

Overall, I think we're faring pretty well. We're tired, sure. But we're also deliriously in love with these two little girls. Just love 'em to pieces! Enjoying the wild ride in this phase of life!

Spring!

We spent the first few hours of Spring on a family walk in one of Portland's oldest city parks, Laurelhurst Park. We spiced up our stroll with a little geocaching along the way. Lelia started out on Tre's back in the backpack but quickly made it known she would rather walk run through the park. We made all 4 geocache finds, got a little wet and muddy and had an amazingly wonderful time! Some pics of our fun...

22 February 2011

surfacing

It's been 5 VERY long weeks since I posted last.

It's not that I haven't wanted to post. Or than I haven't had anything to share. On the contrary, there has been ample of both.

Simply put...I'm exhausted. I'm so tired and worn down, even my hair hurts!

This should probably not have come as a surprise to me. But it has.

I was honestly expecting Wren's newborn-hood to be like Lelia's...sleeping through the night at 2 weeks, smiles at 3 weeks, generally pleasant baby with a few episodes of colic. I realize how naive this expectation was.

Yep, Wren is not Lelia. NOT. AT. ALL. There could not BE a more polar opposite experience to Lelia's early infancy than Wren has presented. Black and white.

For the last 5 weeks, Wren has literally cried non-stop the majority of EVERY day. Colic?!? Oh, yeah...she is the very definition of such. And sleep through the night, she has not. She is up at least 2 times a night to nurse (which isn't bad in itself) but after the 1/2 hour of nursing, it takes another hour and a half to get her back to sleep. Her poor little belly is not very cooperative and causes her (and I) LOTS of sleeplessness. And smiles?!? Nope. Nada. Zilch. All this work and she won't even produce a smile for her haggard mother!

There have been MANY times in the last few weeks I honestly did not think I would be able to get through the day. Upon waking in the morning, my first thought was..."I only have to make it to 8 PM tonight (Lelia's bedtime)". How horrible is that?!? And yet, somehow I did make it through. Through 35 ish of the worst days I have experienced as a mother. Grueling days. It has not been a pretty affair, to say the least!

I know things will get better. I know that I will forget the acute nature of what I feel right now. But I imagine I will always remember how challenging these last 5 weeks have been. That's not to say there haven't been some really wonderful moments in the last 5 weeks...it's just that the veil of exhaustion makes it difficult to fully realize or appreciate those moments. And they seem so fleeting.

Some bright spots in the last few weeks: 5 days/4 nights with my immediate family (Mom/Dad/brother Drew and his family). Although sleep was meager, there were a couple beautiful days that made beach walking possible and thus provided some much needed renewal.
